The concept of one aircraft refueling another while both aircraft are in the air has existed for a hundred years. The first time air-to-air refueling was done successfully was on June 25, 1923, when one Airco DH-4B biplane of the United States Army Air Service delivered fuel to another Airco DH-4B via a hosepipe.
