Amey puts safety and quality at the heart of Network Rail’s DDPF delivery

Amey has brought together colleagues working across Network Rail’s Design Delivery Partner Framework (DDPF) for a series of dedicated safety and quality workshops focused on strengthening safety culture, shared learning, and continuous improvement across rail delivery.

The sessions provided an opportunity for teams to explore the behaviours and challenges that shape safety, including the barriers to speaking up and raising concerns, while drawing on lessons from significant rail industry events over the past 30 years and Amey’s own experiences over the past decade to help inform future delivery.

Discussions went beyond capturing lessons learnt, focusing on how past experiences can inform future decisions, identify risks earlier, and drive continuous improvement across project delivery. This was complemented by practical demonstrations of Amey’s safety tools and processes, including close-call reporting, alongside a session on behavioural and psychological safety.

Gert Vermeiren, engineering sector director at Amey, said: “We all know that safety is not box ticking exercises. It relies on creating the right culture, where people feel confident speaking up, sharing experiences, and learning from one another. Capturing lessons is only the first step. The real value comes from applying them to inform better decisions and safer delivery in the future.

“Bringing our teams together gives us the opportunity to have those conversations openly and reinforces our commitment to putting safety and quality at the heart of how we deliver for all our clients including Network Rail.”

The sessions were positively received by attendees and Network Rail, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between client and delivery partners in driving continuous improvement. Through this initiative, Amey is continuing to embed safety and quality at the heart of its rail delivery, combining technical expertise with a culture that empowers teams to challenge, learn and continually improve.
