Italy’s Truck Drivers Protest Strands Trucks and Empties Southern Supermarket Shelves

Protests began last week in regions like Puglia, Calabria, Sicily, and Campania, blocking motorways, junctions, and ports to protest soaring fuel costs amid rising living expenses.

Buffalo mozzarella production has halted without timely milk deliveries, pasta factories have suspended operations, and supermarkets report empty shelves for fruit, vegetables, cheese, milk, and eggs.

The government has pledged over €150 million in extra aid, with talks yielding a blockade lift in Sicily while others persist until October 27 commitments.
