Spain renews diesel locomotive subsidies with an additional €3m

The Spanish government is allocating €3 million to a compensation scheme for railway undertakings using diesel locomotives. This call for applications, open until 16 November, is the third initiative of this kind this year.
The scheme is a response to the fuel crisis caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted supply and spiked costs all over the world. The measure has “the aim of continuing to mitigate the harmful effect of the increase in the costs of petroleum products caused by the crisis in the Middle East”, the Spanish Ministry of Transport explained.

As in the previous packages, companies can get up to €15,000 per locomotive. Moreover, operators can decide whether they prefer to have a €50,000 cap or cover 70% of the additional fuel costs and remove the limit. The first two calls were launched in April and July, with a reported budget of €3.15 million.
