When Firmus announced Meta agreements for GPU capacity in Southeast Asia on 29 September, the same release confirmed that Meta is “an existing Firmus customer in Australia”, running NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 racks at the Melbourne AI factory. Co-CEO Tim Rosenfield went further on LinkedIn, calling Meta “the foundational partner of Firmus Technologies in Australia” and saying the site, which he calls Melbourne 1, is delivering tokens “in production and at scale for Meta”.
That is a notable change in how Firmus talks about the customer. Its 2 March release on the Melbourne contract, covering about 18,400 GB300 GPUs, described the buyer only as “a leading global technology company”. The AFR reported on 30 June that Meta was Firmus’s biggest customer. The site sits on CDC’s Brooklyn campus in Melbourne’s west, and Firmus calls it the largest Blackwell Ultra deployment in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Southeast Asian deal
The agreements cover contracted capacity plus options to expand, for Meta’s AI research, model development and training. Neither company named the site, and Reuters reported that financial terms were not disclosed. Capital Brief reported that Meta will take one of three planned AI factories on Batam, Firmus’s 360MW campus with DayOne, which is sized for up to 170,000 GPUs with delivery from the first quarter of 2027. Citing two people with knowledge of the matter, it said the deal is expected to lift Firmus’s forecast EBIT by about 15%, roughly US$750m a year on top of the US$5bn Firmus has been presenting to investors.
Where Meta sits among Firmus’s customers
Meta joins three customers Firmus has already named:
- NVIDIA, anchor customer for Project Southgate (October 2025)
- Fireworks AI, on Firmus’s Asia-based cloud region (August 2026)
- OpenAI, anchor customer for two Malaysian AI factories (8 September 2026), in the release that put contracted capacity above 900MW
What’s still open in Australia
The AFR’s June report said Meta “has the right to acquire the group’s compute capacity at any or all of the Australian sites under a deal agreed earlier this year.” Beyond Melbourne, Firmus has:
- 90MW approved at St Leonards near Launceston, which the ABC reported in June is expected to operate from early 2027
- 288MW approved at Bell Bay on 25 August
- planned AI factories at Tailem Bend and Stirling North in South Australia, under a 12-year, 600MW supply deal with Gunvor
For now, the 29 September release places Meta in Melbourne only.
What to watch
Firmus is due to lodge its prospectus on 8 October, after institutional bidding on 6 and 7 October, with trading due to start on 22 October in a float of about A$7bn. Investors will be looking to it for Meta’s share of revenue and the terms of the Australian arrangement.
