Why The US Air Force Is Quietly Retiring Its Entire T-38 Talon Training Fleet Ahead Of Schedule

The United States Air Force is not quietly retiring its T-38 Talon trainer (based on the Northrop F-5) fleet ahead of schedule. As of the time of writing (September 2026), the United States Air Force has not yet even begun phasing the aircraft out and doesn’t plan to retire the first batch of Talons until Fiscal 2028, the same year that its first Red Hawks enter service.
