The engineer had submitted a thermal analysis for a component of the Raptor engine. The document spanned eighty pages. It passed the review of three lead engineers. It was approved and scheduled for implementation.
Two days later, at eleven o’clock in the evening, an email arrived from Elon. A single line. “Your calculation of the heat flow on page thirty-four assumes steady-state conditions, but the load cycle is transient. Recalculate it.”
The engineer said he stared at this email for five minutes. Not because it was harsh. But because it was right. The assumption was buried deep in a sub-calculation that none of the three reviewing engineers had noticed. Elon had spotted it, in a document he didn’t even have to read, on a page where no one would have expected him to double-check it at eleven o’clock on a Tuesday night.
He said, it’s exactly those moments that create the culture at SpaceX. Not because Elon motivates people with speeches. He hardly gives any speeches. The culture emerges because every engineer knows that every submitted document could be read line by line by one man who will find precisely that one mistake everyone else overlooked. Not to punish. But to prevent the error from making it into the hardware. Because mistakes in hardware lead to explosions.
The fear isn’t of getting fired. The fear is of submitting work that isn’t the absolute best, and having the CEO of a six-company empire spot exactly the mistake you should have caught yourself. That fear produces better engineering than any motivational poster ever could.
