Premier Jacinta Allan will resign from the top job ahead of an expected spill motion this morning.
Deputy Premier Ben Carroll yesterday said he would challenge for the leadership.
Ms Allan has led Victoria since she replaced Daniel Andrews in 2023.
Jacinta Allan says she is “immensely proud” of what she has achieved in her time as premier.
She says she is thankful for the support of the public during her tenure.
“It has been the honour of my life to serve you,” she says.
The premier says she will give her unqualified support to Ben Carroll should he put his hand up as leader after she announced her resignation as leader.
“I am making this decision because it is the right thing by the Labor Party and the Victorian people,” she says.
“I was prepared to put my record and my plan to a ballot of members as our rules allow.”
“I believe I would have won. But doing so this close to an election takes up valuable resources, including the most precious of one — time.”
Be careful what you wish for carroll is more incompetent than her and responsible for many messes including education.
Jacinta although under pressure today did build the many things Victoria needed. Great transport projects the state needed.
Without her the state would be back in the 1950’s. Did a lot for the regions hospitals and V/line upgrades.
I worry about this clown called carroll.
