Years of promises and not being able to even complete a single section of High Speed Line Australia is the only continent (other than Antarctica) that has failed to build a high speed rail line. All this posturing when the last prepared business case for Melbourne to Sydney High Speed was a positive return. Sydney to Melbourne air corridor the most expensive in the world.
Thus far Catherine King’s only major rail project at a federal level has just be stopped, canned, scrapped despite customers calling for Inland Rail to be completed. Australia is embarrassing and Catherine King has failed to push even a national rail passenger operation (getting in at the ground level).
All this opportunity and what was the government done? Continued to provide airlines with cash and passengers. We have even wasted $billions on Western Sydney Airport already a white elephant.
Is there no hope for competition on the Sydney to Melbourne route?
Give a construction contract to the Japanese or the Chinese and get on with building this very important project.
1. China operates 40,493 km of high-speed rail, more than the rest of the world combined.
2. Spain leads Europe with 3,993 km, ahead of Japan and France.
3. Morocco is Africa’s only country with a high-speed rail network, while the U.S. has just 735 km in operation.
