Victoria Tops Australia in Car Theft Insurance Claims at $243 Million

New data from the Insurance Council of Australia shows Victoria’s car theft claims surged 25% to over 12,500, costing $243 million in the year through 2025, while thefts dropped in other states like New South Wales and Queensland.

Victoria Police reported 32,000 motor vehicle offences, the highest in over 20 years, often involving key-cloning devices, with thieves recovering 80% of vehicles for joyrides or exports.

Average comprehensive premiums hit $1,718 in Victoria, pushing up costs for drivers amid calls for immobilisers and Faraday pouches; Premier Jacinta Allan touted Operation Pulse successes in retail areas, but critics highlight the ongoing vehicle crime wave ahead of the state election.
