The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably one of the most famous aircraft in the history ofmilitary aviation. After first flying 90 years ago, back in March of 1936, the British-built plane became one of the most defining aircraft of the Second World War when the conflict broke out three years later. Alongside the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire played a particularly important role as a fighter and interceptor aircraft in the Battle of Britain in 1940.
