Aircraft used by the US military follow a formal naming convention. This identifies both the role or type of the aircraft, its actual usage role, and model number. This is a more formal system than used by most other countries. Each aircraft is assigned a unique designation that follows strict naming rules. In addition to this (and not part of the MDS scheme), many aircraft are also given a popular name.
