SRL East TBMs arrive in Burwood

Two more tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have arrived in Melbourne ready for tunnelling of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East to start this year.

The TBMs are now being assembled on-site in Burwood and will be lowered into the TBM launch site in sections.

The SRL site in Burwood is being transformed with 2 acoustic sheds being built to reduce construction impacts on local residents.

Crews are building infrastructure to support tunnelling, including a conveyor system to move excavated soil out of the tunnels. Cabling has been installed between the network support facility in Sinnott Street and the construction site to provide power to the TBMs.

Construction of the second TBM launch site is well underway, where TBMs will later launch towards Box Hill, as well as the underground space where the station will be built. Crews are building underground concrete support walls and excavation will start in mid-2026.
