TransPennine Express (TPE) has donated nine retired station benches from Scunthorpe station to the Appleby Frodingham Railway, giving them a new purpose while supporting a valued local charity.
Rather than being disposed of, the benches have been repurposed as part of TPE’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Now installed across platforms and waiting areas at the heritage railway, they will enrich the experience for the thousands of visitors welcomed each year.
Based within the historic Scunthorpe steelworks site, the Appleby Frodingham Railway plays a vital role in preserving the region’s industrial past.
Run largely by volunteers, the charity relies on donations and community support to maintain and develop its facilities.
By reusing the benches, TPE has reduced waste and avoided the environmental impact associated with disposal, while providing practical support to an organisation dedicated to keeping local heritage alive.
Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead for TPE said: “We’re delighted to see the benches find a new home where they can continue to be appreciated.
“Supporting the Appleby Frodingham Railway not only reduces waste but also strengthens our connection with a much-loved local charity.
“It’s a great example of how small decisions can make a big difference for the environment and the community.”
This initiative reflects TPE’s wider commitment to making more sustainable choices across its operations, while continuing to support the communities it serves.
