The incident happened around 5:50 p.m. Friday outside Mernda train station in Melbourne’s outer north, where the guard picked up the injured boy and walked him to safety, but the group followed and attacked with punches, kicks, and edged weapons.
Paramedics found him with fatal chest stab wounds; he died at the scene, while the boy suffered a broken nose and was treated at hospital.
Police arrested four suspects aged 16, 17, 17, and 18 that evening; three now face murder and armed robbery charges, with a machete recovered nearby.
Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange called the attack ‘savage’ and ‘cowardly,’ praising the guard for trying to do the right thing.
