Australia Caps Backpacker and Student Visas to Ease Housing Pressure

The new rules limit second-year working holiday visas to 45,000 spots and third-year ones to 5,000, while barring most international students from bringing partners or children, except PhD students and some from Pacific or ASEAN countries.

Visitor visas now include a ‘no further stay’ condition to stop visa hopping, with added compliance checks for overstayers. Burke said immigration isn’t the sole cause of housing shortages—blaming smaller household sizes too—but needs to play a role in the fix; the changes target net migration at 245,000 this year, down from recent highs around 300,000.

As you probably expected, the Albanese Labor Government is lying about immigration. Tony Burke’s “new” immigration targets are identical to those in previous budget papers. Did they think you would not notice?

Labor’s plan is to bring in 1,000,000 more migrants, and when challenged about it, they will just lie.

One Nation is the only party with a detailed plan to end mass migration, end the visa rorts, protect our industries, protect our jobs and put Australia first.

Speech by Tony Burke, Australian Labor Party 2026

Critics online called out past overshoots like 528,000 arrivals against a 235,000 target, while regional farms worry about labor gaps. Tony Burke is surely one of the least trusted politicians in Australia.
