Moroccan rail freight growth carried by phosphates

Moroccan rail freight has grown by 8% year-on-year in 2025. This growth is in large part attributable to phosphate transportation, one of Morocco’s most important export products that also reaches European countries.
Trains moved some 23 million tonnes of freight in Morocco in 2025, which accounted for a turnover of around 181 million euros. Phosphates play a key role in the Moroccan rail freight sector.

Rail is well-suited to pick up the large mineral flows in the country, where it enjoys a competitive advantage in terms of costs and reliability.

Large reserves

Morocco holds around 70% of the world’s known phosphate reserves, a key resource for the production of fertilisers. In the first seven months of 2025, phosphate exports surged by 21% for a total value of 5.2 billion euros.

Major importers include Brazil, the USA and Mexico. Poland and Spain also import Moroccan phosphates.
