Jacqui Felgate’s blunt assessment of the West Gate Tunnel

Jacqui Felgate has delivered her assessment of the West Gate Tunnel, after driving through it earlier today.

And the 3AW Drive host described it like “your own private road”.

“I was shocked today, it’s really a joke,” Felgate said.

She was also sent footage today of trucks banked up trying to avoid the tolls in the tunnel.

And president of the community advocacy group ‘Save Willy Road’, Graeme Hammond, is hoping traffic will ease on the road and more people will use the tunnel in due time.

“It gives a financial incentive for those truck operators to turn off the freeway and bypass the toll,” Mr hammond said.

Traffic volumes appear quite low for the tunnel. The project was called out prior to the build it would be a failure and Melbourne has invested $billions into this dud.

A better project with more efficacy would have been that described in the article about a rail network upgrade to the port and expanded Port Rail Shuttles. This could still be achieved but have the government signed an agreement with Transurban to ensure there is no competition to the M4?

  1. This investment a DUD will not work as no route to anywhere.

Took a trip last week no trucks they are all on the Bridge!

  2. Less than 22,000 cars per day they say but that sounds high from all accounts. If you break this number down over 24 hours that is approximately 400 cars per hour in each direction.
