As the Ashes Series is dead and on the back of the Melbourne Test being two days only of cricket, we now turn our attention to Sydney a ground with a track record of interrupted games.
The track record on Sydney Tests speaks for itself.
Sydney has actually lost 26 full days of Test cricket to rain, which is more than any other ground in Australia and even edges out Manchester (25) in the UK.
For many fans, the irony of the 2025/26 series is that after two matches were “ruined” by finishing too quickly (Perth and Melbourne), we are now heading to the one venue where the match might not finish at all.
The “Sydney Curse” by the Numbers
If you feel like you’ve seen more “covers on” than “play on” at the SCG lately, you aren’t imagining it:
- 6 of the last 7 SCG Tests have been interrupted by rain.
- 64% of days during the Sydney Test over the last eight years have seen at least some rain.
- 4 of the last 7 matches there have ended in draws, mostly due to weather.
Is it time to move the test from Sydney and place it with a test in Hobart?
The test is also the last time we are likely to see Usman Khawaja playing test cricket for Australia. Many have suggested the idea of farewell tests should be over and Khawaja not deserving of a farewell test.
