Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Opens with New Underground Stations

The $15 billion Metro Tunnel project connects the Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines via a 9-kilometer twin tunnel under Melbourne’s city centre.

It eases strain on the aging loop and marks the biggest change to the train network in 40 years, with initial services every 20 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Premier Jacinta Allan celebrated the milestone, sharing footage from the 2015 designs to Sunday’s trial runs, while commuters called it a big day for the city.

Despite some criticism over costs and minor delays, the new line promises shorter trips and more reliable service for a growing population.
