April 25 is ANZAC Day, which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli, the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. By virtue of my membership in the Australian Returned and Services League (RSL) Washington DC Sub Branch, this writer had the honor and pleasure of attending this year’s Commemorative Dawn Service at Washington DC’s National World War I Memorial, followed by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast (complete with “ANZAC Biscuit” and Bundaberg rum).
