World War II became a significant event in the history of aircraft development and manufacturing, particularly for the United States. Before the start of the war, the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) only operated a few hundred military aircraft. During the Second World War, tens of new aircraft were designed and built for military service.
