Rail journeys to be affected by track renewals between Bristol and Bath

Great Western Railway services between Bristol and Bath will be affected by essential rail improvement work this half term.

Network Rail engineers plan to replace track between Bristol Temple Meads and Keynsham, as well as carrying out essential maintenance at other locations along the line.

These works will impact train services from Monday 27 to Thursday 30 October:

  • Replacement buses will operate between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa
  • A reduced train service will operate between London Paddington and Bath Spa
  • A reduced train service will also operate between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads using an alternative route – not stopping at Bath Spa/Chippenham
  • Trains will still operate between Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central/Gloucester
  • Trains will also still operate between Bath Spa and Westbury/Portsmouth Harbour/Frome/Weymouth

Oana Apetroaie, GWR Station Manager for Bath Spa and Chippenham, said:

“This work forms part of a wider, ongoing, rail improvement programme to ensure the continued reliability of this important section of the railway.

“During these four days, buses will replace all trains between Bristol Temple Meads, Keynsham, Oldfield Park and Bath Spa.

“As an alternative, rail tickets can also be used to travel on local bus services in the area operated by First West of England buses instead.

“Trains will still run between London Paddington and Bath Spa via Chippenham, and between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads using an alternative route.

“It’s important customers are aware these alternative arrangements could make journey times longer, so please plan ahead.”

Mark Parker, Lead Portfolio Manager for Network Rail, said:

“Over the four days we will be working through St Anne’s tunnel to replace more than a kilometre of track and over 5,000 tonnes of stone.

“Maintenance teams will be working alongside us, taking full advantage of the opportunity to complete other essential track and signalling work while the line is closed.

“Taking time to complete these upgrades is vital to ensure the continued safe and reliable running of the railway, but we appreciate it means disruption to passengers and residents. Thank you for your patience.”

Please note replacement bus services cannot stop directly outside Keynsham or Oldfield Park stations, follow signage between stations and bus stops.
