Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Orders X to Geoblock Ukrainian Murder Footage Posts

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant issued a notice to X on September 26, demanding the removal or geoblocking of 23 posts containing CCTV footage of 28-year-old Ukrainian Iryna Zarutska’s fatal stabbing in Columbus, Ohio, on September 20.

The order, enforced under the Online Safety Act 2021, targets content shared by international users like former Belgian MP Dries Van Langenhove and commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek, with daily fines of A$825,000 for non-compliance, affecting only Australian access.

Critics label the action extraterritorial censorship, while the commissioner cites protection from harmful violent depictions.
