QTS Group Future of Rail event empowers the next generation

National rail contractor QTS Group hosted its Future of Rail event this week at The Midland Railway in Butterley.

Now in its fourth year, and the second time the event has taken place in England, Future of Rail inspires children to learn more about the job roles and potential career paths within the rail industry.

QTS Group hosted a range of activities and workshops, including STEM activities, dedicated careers sessions with QTS staff, and plant and survey equipment demonstrations.

Almost 400 students from across the Midlands attended on 16th September, including Holgate Academy in Hucknall, Quarrydale Academy in Sutton-in-Ashfield, UTC Pride Park in Derby, and West Nottingham College in Mansfield.

Gary Burnett, regional director of QTS Group, said: “Our annual Future of Rail event provides a fantastic opportunity to engage with young people across England and Scotland and inspire them to consider rewarding careers in the rail industry.

“As a proud employer in the region, QTS is committed to showcasing the attractive careers on offer to the communities we operate in, while also emphasising the importance of diversity and inclusion across the sector. Tackling the skills shortage is a priority, and events like these are hugely important in helping to produce a qualified rail workforce fit for the future.

“I’d like to thank all our attendees for their enthusiasm and participation, and also Midland Railway Butterley for their fantastic support in hosting. We must continue to innovate and adapt to ensure the continued success of our industry.”

Kerry Warburton, KS5 engineering lead / careers lead & employer engagement co-ordinator of
UTC Derby Pride Park, said: “I have to thank QTS for having our students along for a fantastic day at their Future of Rail event.

“Both the students and the staff we took along really enjoyed getting an insight into what QTS do and everything that goes into keeping the railway running. A great team and a great event!”

QTS Group provides numerous initiatives to encourage young people to join the industry, including offering apprenticeships and traineeships, launching a graduate development programme, and joining the Government’s Kickstart Scheme.
