While it is too soon to say that the first-class cabin faces extinction, it’s clearly in a state of collapse. Between 2019 and 2024, the number of first-class seats fell by 40%, while other classes, notably premium economy, rose significantly. In tandem, low-cost and ultra-low-cost airlines have increased their share of the aviation market in recent years. One by one, US carriers have phased out first class, with American Airlines being the last to offer it on select Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A321Ts.
