The rail industry is about to get moving like never before. Total Active Hub and Network Rail
Southern Region have joined forces to launch the Railway 200 Active Challenge: Miles of
History; a landmark initiative inspiring employees across the UK rail network team up, move
more and celebrate 200 years of rail in an active and memorable way.
Running from 27 September to 24 October 2025, this industry-wide challenge invites teams
of six to cover 200 miles, on a virtual route starting at Thurso (the most northerly train
station) and ending at London Bridge, through walking, running or swimming. From morning
dog walks to weekend adventures, every mile counts as teams track their progress on a live
digital map, passing iconic railway landmarks and racing colleagues to the finish line.
This innovative partnership blends history, health, and teamwork to create a truly inclusive
movement. The challenge celebrates Britain’s railway heritage while fostering physical and
mental wellbeing for those working across depots, offices, and shifts. As participants log
their activity and share their journey on socials, the entire industry will unite in a show of
pride, community, and collective energy.
Sinead Kennedy, Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing at Network Rail Southern
Region, said:
“Railway 200 is the perfect chance to bring our people together, to move more, feel good,
and celebrate how far we’ve come. Let’s step up for our industry and for each other!”
Why it matters
The Railway 200 Active Challenge is more than just an active challenge, ess drive, it’s a
movement for wellbeing, connection, and celebration and the first opportunity to unite the
whole industry.
By taking part, rail colleagues will:
- Honour 200 years of history with pride and community spirit.
- Boost physical and mental health through regular movement.
- Strengthen workplace bonds as teams unite under one inspiring goal.
- Share stories, milestones, and achievements across the industry.
Participants will also enjoy live leaderboards, milestone rewards, and spot prizes, making the
journey as fun as it is meaningful.
An open invitation to the rail industry
The challenge is free and open to all within the rail industry, from train operators to suppliers
and partners across the UK rail network. Signing up is simple, and teams will receive full
support, including access to the myActiveHub mobile app to log activity and follow their
progress along the historic route.
This isn’t just about moving for fitness, it’s about moving for each other, for our industry, and
