The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt (nicknamed “Jug”) was one of the top US Army Air Forces fighter planes of WWII. It is counted among the warplanes produced in the highest numbers, and it saw excellent success in a variety of roles, including air-to-air and ground attack. Republic Aviation (by then part of Fairchild) would go on to build the famous A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka the Warthog), which remains in service with the United States Air Force.
