Metrans postpones the opening of the terminal in Szeged

HHLA’s rail subsidiary, Metrans, is currently constructing a new terminal in Szeged, near Hungary’s border with Serbia. The terminal was initially scheduled to open this year, but the company has confirmed that it is now expected to be operational in 2027.

The Szeged terminal will have a planned handling capacity of 300,000 TEU, Metrans stated. Once completed, the facility will be Metrans’ third terminal in Hungary. The company already operates a terminal in Budapest and is developing another in Zalaegerszeg, close to the Austrian border.

In recent years, Metrans has significantly expanded its footprint in Eastern Europe. In addition to the two terminals currently under construction in Hungary, the company has recently expanded its terminal in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia. It also launched a new rail service linking the Romanian hub of Arad with Budapest and began upgrading its terminal in Gądki, Poland.

These developments build on Metrans’ established regional network, which already includes connections to Slovenia, Croatia and Czechia.
