Melbourne Airport’s archaic passport control and terminal infrastructure are at breaking point amid winter school holiday traffic.
Multiple callers to 3AW reported long wait times on Friday, which have since been confirmed by an airport spokesperson.

“Some of the infrastructure we have really isn’t fit for purpose,” spokesperson Andrew Lund told Tony Jones.
The international arrivals hall is a national joke. No train to the airport years overdue and the terminals are so small and cramped.
You get a few planes landing at once and your baggage takes an hour to arrive. Worst of all, who in their right mind invested a system of smart gates with a paper ticket. Only one in the world like that and stupid and unnecessary.
“We have so many people coming through, we do need more border force processing infrastructure as well as more room.”
