Modern commercial aircraft typically come in families of several variants. From the aircraft’s base model, they are stretched or contracted. It is much easier for an airplane maker to have as few aircraft types as possible and make modifications within a type certificate. Between variants, engineers attempt to keep the modifications to a minimum, using more or less the same wings, landing gear, and other components and systems.
