The Boeing 747 once served as the backbone of commercial airline long-haul fleets all over the globe. The versatile four-engine aircraft was the first to enter service with a widebody configuration, and the aircraft is often credited with helping bring travel to the masses. Due to its gigantic size, the jumbo jet pushed per-seat operating economics to the point that air travel slowly became accessible to the middle classes. The aircraft today, however, is a rarer find at airports than it once was.
