An airline's number one commodity is the seats on their planes. While some seats might need to remain unfilled for performance reasons on certain flights, airlines want to fill every seat on every departure with a fare-paying passenger. Counterintuitive though it may be, major airlines fly sectors without passengers daily. There are many reasons for this, some lesser known than others.
