During the course of the past half-century, there have been relatively few times in which American and Soviet fighter jets have gone toe-to-toe, primarily due to the lack of direct conflict between the two superpowers. During the First Gulf War, when United States forces were dueling the Iraqi army, there were a few examples in which Soviet fighters of the time were engaged in dogfights with American aircraft.
