While a rare occurrence on the whole in relation to the many flights that take off and land without incidents every day, diversions are (and have almost always been) a fact of life in commercial aviation. For the most part, these occur for safety-related reasons, as, if there is something wrong with the aircraft or one of its passengers, it can be advisable to get the plane on the ground as soon as possible.
