With more powerful turboprop engines hitting the market in the late 1950s, it was time for airlines to replace their older piston-powered airlines like the Douglas DC-3. For British manufacturer Avro (which would eventually become Hawker Siddeley), this was the perfect opportunity to develop a medium-sized turboprop airliner.
