Despite a spate of recent aviation accidents, flying remains one of the safest modes of travel. However, airline safety is developed and improved from the hard lessons learned from previous accidents. The first human flight took place in France in 1783 in a hot air balloon, and the first aviation fatality in a heavier-than-air airplane was US Army Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge in 1908 while flying a Wright Flyer.
