The Sikorsky S-47 was the first US military helicopter designed by Sikorsky and designed without any US Government assistance during the height of World War II. The S-47, also known as the R-4 and VS-316A, would go on to provide the world’s first helicopter rescues and was the first mass-produced helicopter.
