Despite some people (like businessman Elon Musk) claiming the manned fighter is dead, actual experts who study combat assert it is not. It is true that drones have made major advances in recent years (especially in the last three years), but they are limited and will not be able to fulfill the full spectrum of roles of manned fighters for many years to come. But while manned fifth generation fighter jets very much appear to have a future, the future of manned sixth-generation fighters is much more murky. The Air Force has just announced the future of its sixth-generation NGAD program now hinges on the Trump administration.
