The absolute bane of any business is not getting paid for the services delivered, particularly when those services involve significant expenditure to generate. Leaving an aircraft on the ground costs airlines money, but flying one costs a lot more, including personnel costs, fuel, landing rights, ground handling, ticketing, catering, airport usage and so on.
