In 1912, American aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin founded a small aircraft manufacturer that seemed relatively unremarkable at the time, especially in comparison to the dozens of other aircraft-building companies that were coming to prominence at the time. Martin built his own planes, was a highly-regarded pilot, and had also broken multiple aviation records, allowing him to launch a company under his management that could help build even larger and more ambitious aircraft.
