Air Traffic Control towers (ATC) are some of the most iconic pieces of infrastructure at airports and are built to have a commanding view of the airport and its runway. The first traffic control tower was built in 1920 at England’s Croydon Airport near London. It was a wooden hut around 15 feet high with windows on all four sides, and in 1930, the first airport traffic control tower opened in the United States in Cleveland. In the 1950s, towers were able to increase their management of the skies as the industry adopted radar. Here are five of the more notable ATC towers in the US today.
