Guam is an external territory of the United States in Micronesia and is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands. The island has a population of around 170,000 and is one of the most strategically placed pieces of US territory. “Strategic” is a word often used to make anything seem important, but strategic Guam is. Guam’s Andersen Air Force Base is the USAF’s gateway to projecting power into East Asia and boasts perhaps the densest US air defense network. Andersen also becoming increasingly threatened and is a center of the USAF’s effort to pivot to Agile Combat Employment.
