The US Navy’s Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighter jet became super-famous with the American movie-going public in 1986 thanks to the box office blockbuster “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis (though the Tomcat already had garnered a wee bit of movie stardom six years earlier in the time travel thriller “The Final Countdown,” wherein the F-14 unsurprisingly enjoyed a 2:0 kill ratio against WWII Japan’s Mitsubishi A6M Zeros).
