The first of Tyne and Wear Metro’s original trains has been donated to The Stephenson Steam Railway for preservation.

The Tyne and Wear Metro is currently phasing out its old train fleet, which is being sent to be recycled.

Throughout August, children can travel on the Stephenson Steam Railway in North Tyneside for just £1, with under 5s travelling for free.

Two new employees are providing a trans-Atlantic feel to the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Mick Ingledew, 65, is an LNER train driver and has been on the railway for 46 years.

A section of the Metro line is planned to close for five days while new overhead power lines are installed.

On Sunday, 18th May, essential work on the overhead lines in the Metro tunnels under Newcastle City Centre will commence.

The Stephenson Steam Railway and museum based at North Shields in North Tyneside is reopening for the 2025 season on 13 April.
