Before discussing the advantages of having a vertical short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft for the military, we should define the term and how it came about. For years, it was evident to military planners that an aircraft that could take off and land like a helicopter yet be capable of flying at high speeds like a conventional aircraft would be a game changer.
