Port of Gothenburg nearly doubles storage capacity at Arken terminal

The Port of Gothenburg has almost doubled the storage capacity of its Arken Intermodal Terminal. It did so without expanding the site. By rebuilding one of the terminal’s through tracks, about 4,000 square metres of handling space for trailers and other units has been freed up.
The Swedish Port of Gothenburg announced that it has rebuilt and streamlined the layout of the rail tracks at Arken Intermodal Terminal, one of Sweden’s largest intermodal terminals and a hub for transshipment between rail, road and sea. Over time, freight volumes in the area have grown and capacity for some flows has approached its limit, with storage space in particular becoming a limiting factor, the port says.

“In a port, space is a limited resource. Capacity development is therefore not only about building bigger, but just as much about using the infrastructure and land we already have in a smarter way. In this case, 5% more space has given us almost twice the yard capacity”, said Senior Logistics Developer at the Port of Gothenburg Carl Johan Andersson.

More room to manoeuvre

For the terminal operator Gothenburg RoRo Terminal (GRT), the gain lies mainly in daily operations. “When we can store more cargo at the terminal, it becomes easier to plan flows and manage peaks without having to move cargo unnecessarily. This makes operations more efficient and ultimately provides better and more reliable service to our customers”, explained Bridge Manager Intermodal at GRT Emma Meltin.

Arken Intermodal Terminal covers about 65,000 square metres next to the port’s container and Ro-Ro terminals. GRT has operated it since 2022 as an integrated part of its other activities. The terminal has seven electrified tracks with a total length of 3,360 metres and can handle about 100,000 units or trailers per year.
