The cost of constructing data centres has overtaken the price tag behind building warehouses and offices combined in a major shift for Australia’s business community.
Analysis from green.com.au of Australian Bureau of Statistics building data estimates $18.3 billion of construction on data centres began in the 2026 financial year.
This is an enormous jump from the $361 million of data centre construction that began in 2019-20.
It also makes data centre constructions the leading type of commercial structure being erected, surpassing the $10 billion of warehouses and $7.3 billion of offices that commenced building last financial year.
