Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is expanding its fleet of wagons for the transport of finished vehicles with the addition of 70 Laaers wagons, especially designed for electric cars.
“In the European market, it is one of only two rail logistics providers to operate its own car-carrier wagons with its own locomotives”, the company said. The double deck wagons measure 31 metres in length and will boost capacity especially during production peaks, seasonal fluctuations and short-term demand.
In addition to the 70 units, RCG is planning to launch the procurement of 130 more in 2027. The Austrian company moves roughly one million finished vehicles and 600,000 tonnes of components (including engines, rims, doors, car bodies and batteries, every year) for over 20 locations across Europe.
A growing segment
“Today, around 60% of all new vehicles in Europe are transported by rail. A single car train can carry up to 256 vehicles, replacing more than 30 truck journeys by road”, the company specified. Moreover, with the current rise in electric vehicles, there are also new requirements and safety standards for automotive logistics.
With the new wagons, RCG can strengthen its multimodal offer for door-to-door solutions for both finished vehicles as well as components. “This creates stable and sustainable logistics solutions for the mobility of the future”, the company concluded.
