Hungary’s plan to build a terminal at the Italian port of Trieste is currently under review by the Ministry of Transport. The review was initiated by the recently appointed government, which will make a decision once the investigation is over.
The project was moved under the Ministry of Transport, which decided to review the financial, technical and commercial feasibility of the project, according to Hungarian media Telex. A representative from the ministry was quoted as saying that a decision can only be expected when the review is over.
Adria Port
A terminal in Trieste would provide landlocked Hungary with a connection to one of the main ports in Europe. The idea was to reconvert the area where the Aquila refinery, closed in the 1980s, used to be and turn it into an intermodal rail terminal called Adria Port.
The plan under the previous Orban government was to complete the terminal by 2028, and a deal between Adria Port and Gysev Cargo was signed in March to run the rail service between Trieste and Hungary. However, the new executive wants to make sure the project is sound.
Italian works continue
While Hungary is supposed to take care of the future terminal area, Italy continues its activities on the maritime side with quaying works to prepare the site to welcome larger vessels. The Trieste Port Authority is investing around €45 million in this initiative. For the terminal, Hungary is expected to invest around €150 million for land reconversion and construction.
